Online Education Provider, Brainline, says the increase in the matric results of the Class of 2024 is a testament to the learners’ commitment and tenacity to thrive in an online environment.Brainline’s matric results have increased with from 88.2% in 2023 to 88.8% in2024. The Department of Basic Education will release the final matric results on Monday, 13 January 2025. Almost 900-thousand candidates sat for the final exams.
‘We are extremely proud of all our Grade 12 learners who managed to achieve exceptional results overall. While the majority have been home schoolers for several years, some only entered our online education environment from 2020, when their own schools closed during the country-wide school lockdown. Unlike their counterparts in traditional schools, online learners have to be self-reliant and showcase exceptional discipline to attend to their daily studies without constant supervision. As a virtual school we are glad that the results speak for itself,’ explains Brainline CEO, Coleen Cronje.
Cronje says Brainline learners achieved excellent academic results. Two learners achieved 7 distinctions, one student 6 distinctions, 4 students walked away with 5 distinctions and 6 with 3distinctions. Overall Brainline students achieved 108 A’s and 202 B’s.
‘We are also extremely proud that our university exemptions increased from57.7% in 2023 to 65.8% in the current year, enabling more learners to pursue tertiary education,’ she says.
Cronje says the year-on-year consistent performance by learners is a testimony to the efficacy of online learning. She says Brainline also accommodates students with special needs.
‘Our online platform is the ideal vehicle for many students who cannot find a home in a traditional school environment. Our experience has shown that, where learners have the academic support we provide, together with the psychological support of their families, they are often able to over come hurdles that may hamper their academic career otherwise,’ Cronje says.
Cronje has thanked regulatory body, Umalusi, and the Independent ExaminationsBoard (IEB) for their vision to allow registered online educational providers the opportunity to have their students write their final exams.
‘It is extremely encouraging to see these two bodies’ commitment and vision to support online education.’
With the release of the matric results, many students will be able to enjoy a sigh of relief, while others must confront the fact that they may not have met the pass requirements for their final year. Cronje says this does not mean that their matric certificate is out of reach.
‘Failing your matric can be quite as hock to the system, however, now is not the time to be despondent, as there are numerous options to consider such as a remarking of a particular subject or to repeat that subject,’ she explains.
Another option would be to apply for a supplementary exam, which could provide a second chance at success. Cronje says that, whatever the outcome, learners should remember that the subjects they did pass will always remain to their credit. Brainline offers the unique opportunity for learners who need one or more subjects to complete their matric, or who would like to improve their results without the restrictions of a traditional school.
